Tell us a little bit about yourself!
I love to read, and if there is one book character that I relate to, it is Molly Weasley. I love taking care of people—which usually equates to me feeding people. Whether it’s a special dinner for a holiday, homemade rolls for a sick neighbor, or cookies to feed the neighborhood children as they run through my yard, I believe that the best way to the heart is through the stomach. You can often find me in my kitchen, in the backyard with my chickens, cats, and dog, or reading a book while soaking up sunshine.
What is the first thing you ever baked?
My first memories of baking are, ironically, no-bake cookies. My dad always loved his mom’s no-bake cookies. As a little girl I was so excited to call my Grandma and have her teach me over the phone how to make this special treat for my dad. Over the years I’ve gotten many more of my grandma’s recipes and love baking her chess bars, doughnuts, and strawberry pie.
Why did you want to start Cake4Kids in your area?
I love birthdays! I always try to make my children’s birthdays special for them, just as my mom always did for me. I once helped a friend bake and decorate a cake for her son’s birthday and my heart nearly burst when his face lit up as we gave it to him. A personalized cake is something that, as adults, we forget how much it means to a child. Many people want to help children in need. Cake4Kids allows people to use their skills and resources to make children feel special and create a positive birthday memory.
What’s your life motto?
“As we lose ourselves in the service of others, we discover our own lives and our own happiness.” -Dieter F Uchtdorf
About
Jessica Miller, Northern Utah Co-Ambassador
I was born and raised in Utah, and I lived near both sets of my grandparents. I spent a lot of time with my grandmothers, and each of them were awesome bakers. They were the inspiration for my love of baking. I learned how to make pies, cinnamon rolls, bread, and cookies in their kitchens, and it will always be a cherished memory for me.
In my spare time, I like to read, make crafts (anything creative, really), and spend time with my family. As a family, we like to go on road trips and travel to visit other family members in other states.
What is the first thing you ever baked?
The first thing I ever baked was probably cookies. I still love baking cookies!
What was your biggest #bakingfail?
My biggest baking fail was when I was first learning how to cover a cake in fondant, and the cake I baked wasn't very sturdy. When I put the fondant on, the cake totally collapsed, and I had to throw the whole cake in the trash!
