About Cake4Kids
Cake4Kids was founded in September, 2010 in Sunnyvale, CA by Libby Gruender to provide free birthday cakes to at risk youth in the San Francisco Bay Area. Cake4Kids mission is to serve San Francisco Bay Area agencies that cater to disadvantaged children and youth and to provide a service that brings smiles and hope to children who wouldn't otherwise have a birthday. As Cake4Kids volunteer base grows, our mission is expanding and we continue to add new agencies.

Would you like to meet your fellow Cake4Kids bakers at a fun, social event that also benefits our organization? Are you interested in sharing one of your fabulous cakes? Here’s your chance!
Cake-Off4Kids 2011 is our first (annual) amateur baking contest to benefit Cake4Kids. The competition is open to Cake4Kids bakers and the general public. Professional bakers may not enter; however, culinary students are allowed. There is a maximum of 50 cake entries in the following 5 categories (up to, but no more than, 10 cakes per category):
• Ultimate Chocolate
• Best Decorated
• Best Tasting
• Gluten Free (all ingredients must be gluten free)
• Kids (bakers must be 15 years or younger)
Judges will assess the entries and award a GRAND prize in each category. In general, cakes will be judged on the following criteria:
• Flavor (aroma, taste, good balance of flavorings)
• Texture (moist and tender crumb, not soggy or dry)
• Inside characteristics (even grain, evenly baked)
• Outside characteristics (consistent shape/size/surface, overall appeal)
• Frosting (taste, texture, even color and application)
The BEST DECORATED category will be judged first on appearance (design, decorations, color, techniques), then by the characteristics noted above.
Only 150 “tasting” tickets will be sold to the public, in advance and at the door. Ticket prices are $15 for ages 16+, $5 for children 4-15, FREE for 3 and under (Parents MUST keep children with them at all times). Bakers pay a $15 cake entry fee which includes admission to the event; there is a limit of one cake submission per baker.
Attendees will receive a re-usable plate and fork to taste ANY cake in the competition (as many as time allows). After official tasting by the judges, attendees will be able to present their plate to any baker and taste a small portion of cake (about a large spoonful’s worth). Cake tasting is on a first-come, first-served basis until a cake is finished. Cake details (cake flavor, frosting flavor, ingredients) will be posted for those who may have food allergies or sensitivities.
Payments will be accepted online (via PayPal) or by mail using printable forms available on the Cake4Kids website. Entries and tickets will be processed on a first-come, first served basis. This event is expected to sell out quickly; don’t delay in submitting your cake entry and ticket purchase forms!
If you are unable to attend, you can support our Cake-Off4Kids event by making a donation to Cake4Kids using the ticket order form.
NOTE: Paper tickets will not be issued; your name will be placed on a ticket holder’s list at the event check-in table. Tasting ticket holders, please arrive 5-10 minutes early (your name will be listed alphabetically at the check-in table).
We ask that bakers arrive at the venue by 6 pm. Judging will commence at 6:30 pm with winners announced at 8 pm. Contest rules and a full agenda will be sent prior to the event.
We hope to see you there!
